I wonder if those that focus soley on Marvel/DC do so due to not knowing much about the wider community or simply for money/reputation rather than a love for what they do.
I think a lot of it has to do with people being unaware of the wider industry. They either don’t go to cons (and going to cons is essential if you want to break in) or...

Things That Annoy Me
I often come across aspiring comic book artists whose sole focus is breaking in to Marvel or DC. All they seem to do is work on their sample pages, send them in, and then either hear nothing back or get a polite rejection letter…and this leads them to ultimately give up.
This is nuts!
This is akin to wanting to start your footballing career as a regular in the first team at Manchester...

…I finished listening to all the Porcupine Tree music that I had.
