The New 52: FREE COMIC BOOK DAY for 2012

  • Cover by Jim Lee, Adam Hughes and Andy Kubert

I will never EVER like Wonder Woman’s costume. EVER!

But, Holly, fighting crime while wearing a bustier, hot pants, high heels and a choker is empowering! ;P

Bonkers and brilliant. A comic that I would never have read, based on the title, and yet, it’s rather excellent.

Great art, some fantastic concepts and the writing keeps things going at a nice pace.

Definitely worth checking out.

Ok, so, this was good…very pretty, really nice art…but, I did feel a little lost during this. More than any of the other #1s this feels like the continuation of something else rather than something designed for new readers.

Also…very little actually happens. There’s nothing really wrong with that, but, I would have liked to see more of Batwoman and Plebe in action.

This is good, don’t get me wrong, I guess I was just expecting more as so many people have raved about Batwoman…and…yeah…it didn’t blow me away.

Sorry.

Oh…wait…I had assumed that this was written by Greg Rucka…but it’s not? Ok…

Oh, god, I love Damian Wayne…

This was thoroughly enjoyable, Great writing, great art, and a nice bit of character development for Bruce there.

Great stuff!

Oh…oh…oh…now this was good! Really good! The art is awesome…and the writing…Lobdell at his best. Intelligent, interesting, intriguing…

…and…I think Holly might have totally spoiled who “Red” is for me…but I don’t care…because that’s also awesome…

…and I think I will totally ship Kon/”Red” from now on…yes…I can definitely see that…

And…and…and…

…I have missed reading comics by Scott Lobdell. Yes. I have.

Did I mention that this was awesome?

Does Kon not love Tim no more D; D;

Kon hasn’t met Tim yet!

Woo…well…there’s certainly been a lot said about this comic online already…so what can I possibly add?

Okay, here goes…

This isn’t a bad comic. It’s not a particularly good comic, either, but it’s not bad. Where it really fails, for me, is that it’s not a great comic, and if you’re going to do anything less than great, with this concept, then there’s just no point.

People have complained about Harley’s characterisation in this…but, really, she’s barely in it, so who can really tell if Glass has her down or not? But, wait, this is Harley Quinn…this is a character who’s capable of stealing the lime light when the Joker is around! How on earth does she manage to fade into the crowd amongst this group of nobodies? Heck…the guy with a shark for a head is a more interesting character in this…that can’t be right!

Is it stupid that Amanda Waller is drawn as a slim, young, beautiful woman and not the brick shit house that she’s traditionally been portrayed as? Yes. Is that why this comic is disappointing? No, not at all…this comic has failed loooong before Waller appears.

Likewise, Harley’s costume is awful…though as I suspected it’s not as bad as it’s drawn on the cover…but that’s not the problem here.

The problem here is that the concept of Suicide Squad is brilliant. It needs to be a wonderful dark comedy, twisted but brilliant…with art to match. The creative team need to be able to cut loose and do something brilliant and unexpected. This isn’t that. This is…not bad. And not bad just ain’t anywhere near good enough.
