A Companion To The Doctor’s Companions: Nyssa

Being a man possessed of great charm, the Doctor operates as a classless being. So long as you’re not mean-spirited or judgmental, he’ll happily get along with anyone. And in looking back on his choice of companions, he’s attracted friends from all walks of life, from noble savages Leela and Jamie, up through working class Rose and Ben to the white-collar Ian and Rory and the more well-to-do Polly and Victoria. Nyssa tops the lot, however. She’s an aristocrat, the daughter of a high-ranking consul, in the Union of Traken, and young and precious with it.

Nyssa ponders the eternal question, how many freckles does the Doctor have? She will begin an investigation as soon as the human girl is asleep.

Sad Nyssa. :(

Also: To be added to the growing list of Who actors/actresses filed under ‘how are you even real?’

On the topic of RegenerGate (I’m behind the times), I get why RTD had to do the little hand-wave and get rid of the regeneration limit, and I’m completely comfortable spinning it as “because the Time Lords no longer exist, there’s no longer a limit on regenerations.” Cool. I’m totally down with that.

What DID bother me was RTD’s attitude about the fans bringing up the 12 regenerations (and thus 13 lives) limit. He brushed it off so lightly:

“507 - I could not resist! I was hooting. It’ll never stick, though. That 13 lives is stuck in people’s heads. It is, isn’t it funny? Yet they only said 13 once or twice. That’s why I’m quite serious that that 507 thing won’t stick, because the 13 is too deeply ingrained in the public consciousness. But how? How did that get there? It’s fascinating, it’s really weird. Anyway, that’ll be my book in my retirement!”

Um, RTD… one of the reasons it’s so “deeply ingrained” in the fandom is because it WASN’T brought up once or twice, but was a defining aspect of the Master’s life for much of the show. The Master KILLED a Companion’s father because he couldn’t regenerate anymore and he needed a new body, so he took over the body of Nyssa’s father and paraded around in that for years. He also sought to steal the Doctor’s remaining regenerations as his own. It even carried over into the movie!

I’m fine with striking down the limit (because really, you have to for the show to survive), but dismissing the existence of the limit out of hand as a nothing plot point that is so inexplicably stuck in the fans’ mind is very disingenuous and completely cheapens the murder (and body-stealing) of Nyssa’s father.

This. So much this. I can’t even. I swear it’s like RTD never even watched the show some days…
