There was a point in the 1980s when pretty much everything Marvel was publishing was profitable—and at that point, the weaker-selling titles were still routinely pruned away, the notion being that the time and effort being spent on those books could probably be spent on something else that would sell better. It’s this that led to the demise of series such as DEFENDERS and POWER MAN AND IRON FIST.
